A technical lecture on “El Niño and Global Climate†organized by The Institution of Engineers (India), Uttar Pradesh State Centre, Lucknow, Prof. (Dr.) Bharat Raj Singh, Director General (Technical), School of Management Sciences, Lucknow, highlighted that El Niño is a major global climate phenomenon that extends far beyond the Pacific Ocean.
He explained that abnormal warming of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific can weaken India's southwest monsoon, leading to reduced rainfall, drought, lower agricultural and food production, declining reservoir and groundwater levels, and growing drinking water and irrigation challenges. These impacts may also drive food inflation, affect power generation, and strain the rural economy.
Prof. Singh further noted that El Niño can trigger extreme weather worldwide, including heavy rainfall, floods, heatwaves, wildfires, and disruptions to marine ecosystems. He emphasized that scientific research, advanced technology, early warning systems, effective policies, and public awareness are essential to mitigating climate-related risks in an era of global climate change.
The lecture was chaired by Er. V. P. Singh, Chairman, IEI Uttar Pradesh State Centre, while Prof. Jamal Nusrat conducted the session. Honorary Secretary Er. N. K. Nishad concluded the event with a vote of thanks.
